Last Time is one of those records that sounds like vintage soul, but somehow it feels modern — even though we’re using the same instruments they used back in the day. Honestly, I think only Kola can do that. In my honest and objective opinion, he’s one of the best artists in Montreal (I’m pretty sure everyone in MTL knows him at this point).
Kola is also a good friend of mine and one of the best guys to go out with at night — absolute legend. One day he invited me to his studio to go through some records he’s been working on. Most of them sounded polished, groovy, and ready to go… but Last Time caught my attention. The swing was there, but we both felt something was missing.
That’s when we started jamming, refining the melody and structure, until we landed on that magical hook. I’m pretty sure Kola still has a recording of us figuring that one out. Later, we added some beautiful backing vocals, and bam — the record sounded fantastic.
Honestly, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to say no to a Kola session… unless he moves to another planet. Oops — was that a reference to the track
